Strangelove: The Depeche Mode Experience
Forty years after Depeche Mode released Music for the Masses, Strangelove-The Depeche Mode Experience announces its most ambitious touring celebration yet: the 2027 “40 Years of Music for the Masses” World Tour, launching in January on the East Coast before continuing across the United States throughout the winter and spring, followed by a European tour in summer and fall.
This will be more than a celebration of an album. It will be a journey back to the moment when Depeche Mode changed the scale, ambition and cultural perception of electronic music in America.
Released September 28, 1987, Music for the Masses marked a pivotal point in Depeche Mode’s evolution. Featuring such enduring songs as “Never Let Me Down Again,” “Strangelove,” “Behind the Wheel,” “The Things You Said,” “Sacred” and “Pimpf,” the album fused synthesizers, sampling, industrial textures, dark romanticism and enormous melodic hooks into something that was simultaneously intimate and monumental. (Depeche Mode)
The album’s title, while intending to be ironic, proved almost prophetic.
The subsequent Music for the Masses Tour ran from October 1987 through June 1988, ultimately encompassing 101 performances. Its American dates included increasingly enormous venues, culminating in the legendary June 18, 1988 concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. (Depeche Mode)
That trajectory forms the heart of Strangelove’s 2027 celebration.
